Minimum review versus real proficiency
A flight review is not a checkride, but it is also not an automatic signoff after two hours. The FAA specifies minimum content and duration; the review must still be completed to the instructor's satisfaction.
FAA minimum flight review
At least one hour of ground training and one hour of flight training. Ground includes current Part 91 operating and flight rules. Flight includes the maneuvers and procedures needed to demonstrate safe exercise of your pilot privileges.
Returning after a short break
A recent and proficient pilot may be able to complete the review near the regulatory minimum. We will still cover the required material and address any skills that need attention before endorsement.
Returning after a long absence
There is no pressure to fit years of rust removal into one flight. We can use one or more sessions to rebuild procedures, radio work, landings, emergency skills, navigation, and confidence before completing the review.
A flight review endorsement confirms completion of the review; it does not automatically restore every separate recent-experience requirement. See 14 CFR 61.56 for the complete current rule.
Flight review and currency are not the same thing
Depending on how you intend to fly, you may need more than a current flight review. We can look at your logbook and build the session around the privileges you want to exercise.
Flight review
Generally required within the preceding 24 calendar months to act as pilot in command, unless another applicable exception in the regulation has been met.
Passenger currency
Carrying passengers generally requires three takeoffs and landings within the preceding 90 days. Night passenger currency requires full-stop landings during the regulatory night period.
Instrument currency
Instrument-rated pilots who remain eligible to regain currency through recent-experience tasks may schedule the aircraft with qualified safety-pilot support for approaches, holding, and intercepting and tracking under simulated instrument conditions. This is not instrument instruction or an IPC; pilots outside the permitted window need an IPC from an appropriately rated instructor.

Flight review and currency rates
Aircraft wet rate is $180/hr, including fuel. Flight review and day or night instruction is $50/hr. Instrument-currency safety-pilot scheduling is discussed separately based on the flight.
Flight review and currency questions
Can a flight review take more than two hours?
Yes. One hour of ground and one hour of flight are regulatory minimums. The endorsement is given after the review is satisfactorily completed, so additional training may be appropriate.
Do you offer night currency?
Yes. We can work on the full-stop takeoffs and landings and night proficiency needed for the flying you plan to do.
What if I have not flown in years?
That is welcome. We can create a patient, multi-session return-to-flying plan and complete the formal review when you are comfortable and proficient.
Can you provide instrument-currency support?
Yes, for instrument-rated pilots who are eligible to regain currency by completing the required recent-experience tasks. We can provide N8440W and qualified safety-pilot support; we do not advertise instrument instruction or IPCs.
